GoPro’s latest action camera, the GoPro Hero12 Black, offers a range of exciting features for adventure enthusiasts and content creators. Priced at $399, this camera promises an extended runtime, higher video resolutions, Bluetooth audio support, and enhanced connectivity with tripod mounts.
Building on the success of its predecessor, the Hero11 Black, GoPro Hero12 Black boasts a larger sensor and optimized encoding, ensuring smaller file sizes without compromising image quality. It introduces wireless timecode sync, simplifying multi-camera editing, and supports vertical capture mode, making it perfect for creating TikTok or Instagram REEL clips without post-production cropping.
The Hero12 utilizes the same Type 1/1.9 sensor as the previous model, offering versatile aspect ratios, including vertical 9:16, widescreen 16:9, traditional 4:3, and full-frame 8:7. These aspect ratios can be applied to various modes, including TimeWarp, Time Lapse, Night Lapse, and Night Effects. Additionally, the camera enables long exposure modes for capturing light painting, star trails, and vehicle lights. The user interface has been updated for more straightforward controls.

For advanced users, the Hero12 Black features the GP-LOG capture option and provides LUTs for precise color grading during post-production. It also supports wireless audio via Bluetooth, compatible with earbuds, headphones, and microphones.
This flagship model introduces compatibility with the Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory, offering a 177-degree view and three field-of-view settings. The Max Lens Mod widens the Hero12’s perspective by 36% and increases its height by 48%. It comes with scratch-resistant glass and a hydrophobic lens coating to repel water, mud, and grime. However, the Max Lens Mod is sold separately.
GoPro has significantly improved the power management system, providing up to 70 minutes of continuous recording in 5.3K at 60p, over 95 minutes at 5.3K 30p, and more than 155 minutes at 1080 30p with HyperSmooth 6.0 video stabilization.
Nicholas Woodman, GoPro CEO and Founder, states, “Hero12 Black resets the bar for immersive life-capture, offering users the ability to relive their favorite experiences in vivid detail.”
As expected from GoPro, the Hero12 Black is waterproof up to 33 feet and features simplified controls. The camera includes mounting fingers with a standard tripod mounting thread (1/4-20), enhancing compatibility with camera mounts and accessories.
GoPro has also introduced a new extension pole, extending up to 48 inches and collapsing to just 10 inches. It includes a waterproof wireless shutter for added convenience.
The GoPro Hero12 Black is available for pre-order at $399, while the Max Lens Mod 2.0 can be purchased for $100 (or $80 for GoPro subscribers).
